I worked closely with a Petrie service who wanted to extend their license from 2yrs-6yrs to include under 2yr old's. We had two problems that we had to overcome, 1. space for what we needed and 2. being an old building we were working with very old and uneven flooring. 

To solve this we had to compromise, so after careful consolation we concluded there was not enough space to drop in a nursery cot room with ease, so I suggested the service go with a drop of license to 15mths and above only where they would not actually need a separate cot room. It would still open up a space for younger children to attend, boost revenue without a big outlay and give the service the ability to enrol younger siblings.

The process was a reasonably easy renovation to complete and of course, with the least disruption to the operation of the service.

Changes that we made:​

We did various changes that were staged over a couple of weekends and after weekdays hours so the service could remain running during their normal operation hours.

1. The change table and sink area were extended to include a built in babies bath. (I had this made offsite at a nearby carpentry business so it could be dropped in with ease at the last minute).

2. To make space for this we had to move a child sink but that was plumbed-in in stages so no disruption was caused to the daily operation and the plumber was very accommodating, always making sure the toilets where running and working as minor changes were completed. 

3. Installed a second safety mirror to ensure safe monitoring of the children at the newly placed child hand wash sink.

4. Installed a half door on the entrance to the bathroom and cut the door down into the kitchenette area down to a half door for easy access and visibility for bottle making and heating etc

5. We transformed a former cupboard in the kitchenette area into a fridge space so we had room for a bigger fridge and a bit of extra shelf space for baby bottles, formula etc.

6. We used the mini fridge space under a bench to install a brand new high speed and high temperature dishwasher as the existing kitchenette only had a double sink. 

7. We changed some of the old mustard colour Lino into a blue epoxy floor that was easy to lay and eliminated the uneven surfaces throughout the service due to their laying process. It also gave us a nice slip resistant service in the areas that needed it. 

8. I worked with the approved provider/director to create new bath and toileting policies and bottle making and heating polices for the service stakeholders and educators. 

The service with very happy with the outcome of the final job, and the fact they could continue to operate through out the process was a huge plus for them. This was achieved solely because I coordinated the jobs to be completed afterhours or during the weekend.

As this was a reasonably small job I was not only a consultant but also acted as onsite foreman and procured the plumber, carpenter and flooring trades to ensure they worked together in a timely manner. I also organised the drawings, town planning approval and the final department approval to ensure the license was altered to the services need needs.
